Feed’Em Soup plans Grilled fundraiser, silent auction

Published: Monday, May 6, 2013 11:35 a.m. CDT

Feed’Em Soup’s second annual fundraiser, Grilled, is set for May 17. Lunch service will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; dinner service will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at 122 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

Four custom skewers, created by Chef Alex Smith, will be grilled up – habanero barbecue pork, raspberry citrus chicken, chimichurri beef and garden veg.

This year’s installment of Grilled also will feature a silent auction to raise funds for Lexi’s Kids Corner. Lexi’s Kids Corner is a program that runs on meal days from 5 to 7 p.m. and is open to children of all ages. Staffed by Feed’Em Soup volunteers, the program is free and open to anyone. Each week, the program follows a particular theme and features a story and an art project, science experiment, game or other activity aimed at being fun yet educational.

Lexi’s Kids Corner is named after Lexi Weber, a founding volunteer killed in a car accident in February 2011. Weber was studying at Northern Illinois University to become a teacher. The program continues her mission to be a positive influence in the lives of children. All of the funds raised through the silent auction will help keep the doors to Lexi’s Kids Corner open.

The silent auction will feature items from Walt Disney World, Arlington International Racecourse, Marriott Theatre - Lincolnshire, the Rockford Ice Hogs, the Chicago Wolves, The Laugh Factory, Milwaukee Food Tours, Capital Brewery - Middleton, Wis., Buena Vista Golf Course, Sycamore Park District and more.

Grilled tickets cost $10 each and are on sale now. Children age 5 and younger eat free. Tickets are not required to participate in the silent auction. Bidding will open at 11 a.m. and continue until about 8 p.m. Bidders need not be present to win.
