PREP ROUNDUP: G-K routs Winnebago in 5 innings

The Genoa-Kingston softball team beat Winnebago, 11-0, in five innings Monday.

Kailyn Cygan picked up the win in a complete-game effort. At the plate, Baylie Ullmark and Tori Hensley each had a double for G-K (3-2) while Paige Keegan picked up two hits.

BASEBALL

Cogs fall: Winnebago beat Genoa-Kingston, 3-1. Jake Langford was 3 for 3 with a home run, and Adam Price went 1 for 3 with a double for G-K. Tommy Hansen threw five innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out four.

The Cogs are 2-8 overall and 1-1 in Big Northern Conference play.

GIRLS SOCCER

Royals play to draw: Jacqueline Madden had the lone goal for Hinckley-Big Rock in a 1-1 tie against Byron. Madden’s goal came in the first half with H-BR down 1-0.

The Royals are 3-4-2 on the season and will take on Indian Creek at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Knights shut out: Geneva beat Kaneland, 1-0. The Knights are 3-4-1.

G-K loses BNC East match: Burlington Central topped Genoa-Kingston, 7-1. Ixtel Viramontes scored the lone goal for the Cogs (3-6, 1-4 BNC East) with an asisst from Shannon Schumacher.

“We came out mentally not into the game tonight. After the 15-minute mark, we decided to start putting in an effort and we actually played very well,” G-K coach Randy Tate said. “We moved the ball on a great combination play and Ixtel finished a nice pass to get back into the game. The defense started playing solid and Alyssa made some great saves.”

LATE SATURDAY

BASEBALL

G-K swept: Aurora Central Catholic beat G-K in a doubleheader, 5-3 and 19-5. Andrew Caldwell was 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored for the Cogs in Game 1, and Ben Rabe went 1 for 2 with a run. In Game 2, Mike Kuhn was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and a run scored while Rabe finished 2 fo 3 with a double and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Hawks lose two: Newark swept a doubleheader against Hiawatha, winning 10-0 and 9-6. Ashley Tamraz had a triple and two RBIs for the Hawks in Game 2, and Haley Melendez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Madison Marshall went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Madison Marshall finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
