Prep roundup: Genoa-Kingston baseball beats Harvard

Brady Huffman struck out 14 hitters in a complete-game effort for the Genoa-Kingston baseball team in a 6-0 win over Harvard. Huffman allowed just two hits for the Cogs, who are now 2-4 and 1-0 in the Big Northern East.

Jose Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases for G-K, while William Crozier was 1-for-4 with a two-run double and Danny Hansen went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

"It was by far our best game and we have improved every time out, and we need to continue in the same direction," Cogs coach Anson Ellis said.

T'Wolves fall in extras: Earlville-Leland beat Indian Creek, 8-7, in eight innings. David Boehne was 1-for-2 with a grand slam for the Timberwolves and Tim Sommerfeld finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Hawks sweep DH: Hiawatha beat Paw Paw in a doubleheader, 1-0 and 13-0. Tyler Burger and Mike Mercado both earned wins on the mound for the Hawks. Will Corn had the lone run of the game with a home run in the 1-0 victory, and had two RBIs in the other matchup.

Tyler Burger and Donald Giebel each had two RBIs in Hiawatha's run-rule win.

H-BR beat in five innings: Somonauk defeated Hinckley-Big Rock, 11-1, in five-innings due to the 10-run rule. The Bobcats are 4-1 and 3-0 in Little Ten play, and held the Royals to just one hit.

On Friday, H-BR beat LaMoille 12-2, with Jacob Morsch earning his first varsity win while finishing with 11 strikeouts.

Royals suffer first loss: Herscher beat Hinckley-Big Rock, 4-1. Lauren Paver had the lone goal for the Royals (3-1-1) on a penalty kick.

Cogs shut out: Richmond-Burton beat Genoa-Kingston 7-0. The Cogs fall to 1-2 overall, and have the same mark in the Big Northern East.

"Richmond is a very talented team and we witnessed their skill tonight. They exposed some of our weak areas, but we still have time to work on our mistakes," G-K coach Randy Tate said. "We have a lot of new players in new positions and it is going to take a few games to get everything worked out. We now know what to expect from a high-level team."

DeKalb goes 1-2 at quad: DeKalb tennis got a 3-2 win over Bartlett, but lost to Wheaton-Warrenville South and Crystal Lake South at a quadrangular Saturday. Phil Hendrickson went 3-0 for the Barbs at the No. 2 singles spot. Matt Kulma finished 2-1 at No. 1 singles.
