To the Editor:
Soon we will have the opportunity to select a mayor for DeKalb. We have several candidates who are willing to serve, but I believe that John Rey is the one who is best prepared and ready to lead DeKalb into the future.
He knows the community well, having lived here for 48 years. Having earned an MBA from Northern Illinois University, John recognizes the possibilities for a true communiversity.
He sees the need for strengthening the ties and planning for the future with cooperative endeavors between DeKalb and NIU. He is unique among candidates as he has retired from the corporate world and would be available to meet the needs of the city as mayor at any time.
John and his wife, Marge, have raised two sons who attended the DeKalb public schools and currently have two grandchildren enrolled in the district.
John is no stranger to the inner workings of local government, as he has served as president of the DeKalb District 428 school board and is a founding member of the DeKalb Education Foundation and the DeKalb/Sycamore Bookcase Project.
He is supportive of the DeKalb library expansion and has publicly indicated that, if elected, he will annually donate $1,000 of his mayoral part-time salary to that cause.
John is invested in the future of DeKalb. He has demonstrated leadership and organizational ability in many local community organizations such as the Better Government Association and Fire & Police Commission, and has presided over the construction of the Ben Gordon Center and Reality House.
He has served as president of the DeKalb Kiwanis Club, and as a member of the DeKalb Farm Bureau, Safe/Quality Housing task force, the YMCA, and the Boy Scouts of America.
John’s service to the DeKalb area has been with grace, passion, love and dignity which have earned him the respect of the community. John has the time, the energy, the ability and the desire to serve DeKalb as its next mayor. Please join me in electing John Rey, mayor of DeKalb.
Lou Jean Moyer
