The Blackhawks acquired veteran center Michael Handzus from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick Monday.
The Hawks have confirmed the trade, which first was reported by TSN. To clear a roster spot, the Hawks demoted forward Brandon Bollig to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.
Handzus, 36, has notched two points (1 G, 1 A) in 28 games with the Sharks this season but has been a productive center since he entered the NHL in 1998. He has 461 points in 939 career games, which has included stints with St. Louis, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Jose.
Handzus also appeared in eight games with the Hawks during the 2006-07 season. He registered eight points and six penalty minutes during that stretch.
The Hawks will host the Nashville Predators at 7:30 p.m. today at the United Center. At 26-5-3, the Hawks have the best record in the Western Conference with 14 games remaining in the regular season.
