To the Editor:

I have known LaMetra Curry for 10 years. She has always been very active in the community and dedicated to uplifting and mentoring children and women of all ages. I have worked under her leadership with the DeKalb Chapter of SIMBA (Safe in My Brother’s Arms) and SIMSA (Safe in My Sister’s Arms), a national youth organization for young men and women from ages 8 to 18. Because of her work with SIMBA-SIMSA and the wide variety of children’s programs and activities she has been involved with, she was awarded the Children’s Learning Center of DeKalb’s Mandy Derrington Friend of the Child Award in 2008.

I have also worked under her leadership in the Project Prime program. Project Prime is a Northern Illinois University College of Education’s Office of Recruitment Services program. The program helps to inform prospective students about the process of transitioning to college as part of a teacher’s education program.

LaMetra has been involved in various events at DeKalb School District 428, as well. Most notably for me were the eighth-grade commencement speeches she has delivered three times now. Her speeches have always been outstanding and inspirational messages that engage the children and promote education, empowerment and self-worth.

In addition, she founded Operation Bookbag in 2005. An organization geared toward equipping children with the fundamental supplies needed to begin the school year. Such as, bookbags, pencils, paper, etc. An annual picnic is held to distribute the supplies to those in need.

LaMetra is always ready, willing and able to embark on a new venture. She is hard-working, compassionate, and in my opinion an integral part of the DeKalb community.
