Letter: Bus crowding a problem for Sycamore students

To the Editor:

I am an eighth-grader at Sycamore Middle School. I ride the bus to and from school. This letter is about the overcrowded bus problems that I have noticed since the beginning of the school year.

Since the budget cut on transportation in School District 427, the numbers of buses have been decreased and because of that, more kids have to fit on each bus. My personal experience since state funding reduction on transportation is that my bus is often at capacity or even sometimes over limit.

Our last bus stop before going to school has 20 kids waiting at it.

When we get over capacity, students are forced to fit two or three people in a one-person seat in the back of the bus, resulting in a blocked aisle and limited moving space.

The limited space is more of a problem Mondays and Fridays. I say this because the music students (of which I am one) are bringing home their instruments and there is even less room in the bus seats. The instrument cases can be in the way, and I’ve also been witness to multiple accidents involving instrument cases hitting people in the face because people are so close to each other.

I think a simple solution to this problem is to add more buses back to the bus line for students heading to Sycamore High School.

There are small groups of kids on several buses who are dropped off at the high school for one reason or another. I think instead of them having a long trip before getting to the high school, they should have a bus that goes straight to the high school. That way those students get home faster and the other buses might not be as crowded, crammed and hectic.

Thank you for reading and letting me bring this problem to your attention.
