The Huntley Middle School Scholastic Bowl team swept the competition Saturday to take first place at the North Central Junior Conference Tournament in Rochelle.
The team includes captain Paul Un and Evelyn Adams, eighth grade; Ben Allen, Lincoln Draper and Chris Allen, seventh grade; and Tony Un and Carter Maxwell, sixth grade. The team is coached by Sean Potts and Cynthia Chomicz.
The team’s record after the competition is 10-1 as they prepare for the Barrington Invitational on March 16 and Illinois Elementary School Association Regionals on April 24.
The Huntley team competed last weekend against Rochelle B team and Sycamore and Clinton Rosette A teams. They won the final round championship game against Belvidere South A team, which was the one team that beat Huntley during the regular season.
The top scoring players from Huntley were Paul Un with 25 Toss Up Questions over four games for 250 points earned for the team overall, and Lincoln Draper with 21 Toss Up Questions over four games for 210 points earned for the team overall.
“As coaches, Mrs. Chomicz and I are unbelievably proud of this team,” Sean Potts said in a news release. “They’ve worked extremely hard to get to the level at which they are currently playing, and it’s a credit to their remarkable teachers at Huntley, their support networks at home, and their strong desire to be the fastest and the best in this game.”
“It’s not often you see a team get so much better with every game they play, but that is exactly what Huntley has done this year. We couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them,” he said in the release.
The Huntley team will compete at IESA Regionals in April for a chance to advance to sectionals and state competition.
