Kishwaukee Band concert is ‘By Request’

Published: Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

The Kishwaukee Concert Band will present “By Request” at 3 p.m. March 10 in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University.

The all-volunteer band, made up of adults who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past, was formed in the fall of 2002 as a dream of Sue Huhta. The original name was The Greater Kishwaukee Area Symphonic Band.

Because of some confusion in the minds of the community, the name was changed to The Greater Kishwaukee Area Concert Band. Last January, the name of the band changed again to The Kishwaukee Concert Band. The band established a formal structure, an official board of directors and committees. Incorporating under the new name sets the stage to file for IRS nonprofit status.

“By Request” will include such favorites as “The Colonel Bogey March,” “The Godfather Trilogy,” “Edelweis,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Swanee” and other well-known favorites. The final selection will be “A Disney March Spectacular.” There is no charge for the concert; donations are appreciated.

Membership in the band is open to anyone older than 18 with previous band experience. There are no auditions. Rehearsals are held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb. For more information, call John at 815-825-2350 or Sue at 815-899-4867 or visit www.kishconcertband.org.
