Man arrested with marijuana at DeKalb KFC

SYCAMORE – Chicken was not the only aroma filling the lobby of the DeKalb KFC on Monday night.

After smelling a strong scent of marijuana coming from a customer, KFC employees called police who eventually identified and arrested Parkland Beard after a brief chase through the lobby and into the parking lot, police said.

Beard, 21, of the 1100 block of West Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, was charged Monday with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a school, obstructing identification and resisting a peace officer.

The incident was close to Northern Illinois University.

According to court documents, police approached Beard about 8:50 p.m. when they arrived at KFC, inquired about the smell of marijuana and asked for his name.

Beard lied about his name twice before being asked to turn around to be handcuffed, police said.

He then darted through the KFC lobby and ran to the parking lot, where he was arrested for allegedly having a little more than a quarter-ounce of marijuana in 19 separate plastic bags, police said.

The most serious charge Beard faces is a Class 4 felony, which typically is punishable by up to three years in prison.

He appeared in court Tuesday and posted the $500 necessary to be released on a $5,000 bond.
