Sylvan Learning to open outpost in Hinckley

HINCKLEY – Parents will not have to worry about driving 30 minutes or more to get their kids to the Sylvan Learning Center in Sycamore. The center will be coming to them.

Starting Jan. 15, Sylvan instructors will host after-school tutoring sessions at Hinckley Public Library at 100 Maple St. so parents do not have to make the drive, said Wendy Kunz, the center’s director.

“We are bringing our reading and math classes, as well as homework support, to the community,” Kunz said.

Sylvan Learning already has an outpost at Rochelle Public Library, which they operate Mondays and Wednesdays, Kunz said. Their Hinckley location will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays.

During these sessions, the students use iPads to access Sylvan Learning’s digital platform known as SylvanSync. Kunz said students are very comfortable using technology, and that SylvanSync “keeps them engaged in building their skills.”

Kunz added that the tutoring sessions are not about students just playing around with an iPad.

“Our teacher is still there doing all the teaching,” Kunz said. “We’re just using technology to enhance and using it to make learning more fun and relevant to kids.”

As the students are being tutored by Sylvan instructors, the parents and siblings of the student will have things to do at the library, said Rylie Carter, director of the Hinckley library.

She said she recognized that “the parents and younger siblings need something to do,” and that they are working on developing craft and/or learning times for younger students.

Kunz said anywhere from 75 to 100 students are signed up with the center at any point during the year. With the extensions at Hinckley and Rochelle, Kunz said she hopes more parents sign up their children as the prospect of a long drive would no longer be a deterrent.

“I’m really excited to be able to help more kids and help them be more successful in schools,” Kunz said.

The center’s services are available to clients only. To learn more about Sylvan Learning, contact Kunz at 815-899-8909 or wendykunz@sylvan3231.com.
