Northern Rehab hosts oncology discussion

Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists recently hosted an in-service discussing physical therapists’ role in oncology.

More than 1.5 million new cancer cases are diagnosed every year. Individuals who are diagnosed and treated for cancer have many side effects that limit their daily function including fatigue, mobility restrictions, pain, weakness, stress and decreased quality of life.

Physical therapy treatment can be very beneficial, however, it is often overlooked. Physical therapists can help improve mobility and strength and decrease pain, fatigue, stress and anxiety, and restore quality of life for individuals who are fighting cancer or are in remission.

Treatments offered by physical therapists to help people suffering from cancer-related side effects include soft tissue and joint mobilization, stretching, strengthening, conditioning and patient education. The benefits of physical therapy and exercise include improved immune function, heart and lung endurance and muscle mass and decreased adverse weight gain, heart rate, blood pressure, pain, swelling and cancer-related fatigue.
