DeKalb County officials emphasize proper plowing

As the first snowstorm of the winter season descends on DeKalb County, county officials urged residents to use lawful snowplowing methods.

State law prohibits people from shoveling snow and ice onto any public roadway. A joint statement from DeKalb County Engineer Nathan Schwartz and Sheriff Roger Scott said doing so could result in citations and a court appearance.

In the statement, Schwartz and Scott advised residents to plow snow to the right side of the driveway.

"When placed on the left side, snowplows have the opportunity to push the snow right back into the driveway from where it came," the statement reads. "If snow is pushed onto the roadway and traffic crosses the snow, it becomes packed and adheres to the pavement thereby creating an icy patch."

Schwartz and Scott also advised residents to give emergency vehicles plenty of room to operate, and for drivers to prepare enough time to travel and slow down when necessary.
