‘A Christmas Carol’ opens today

Published: Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 5:30 a.m. CST

Tiny Tim, Christmas ghosts and Ebeneezer Scrooge will take the stage in the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” at the River’s Edge Theatre in Yorkville starting today.

The show, presented by PR Productions, runs this weekend only.

The play was adapted for the stage by Stefano LoVerson and Mary Irey. The script holds true to the original story. The production is a family favorite, and takes the audience on a journey of discovery and redemption as the true meaning of Christmas is revealed through a heartwarming stage experience.

“This show is a play-within-a-play, combining the classic version with a deteriorating relationship between the characters,” Christopher Roe, director of the production, said in a news release. “The authors were able to seamlessly weave the two stories together in such a way that the traditional heartwarming ending takes on a whole new meaning.”

The production features Roe and Jennifer Sall.

The timeless story follows Ebeneezer Scrooge, a bitter, miserly soul who views Christmas as a time for finding yourself a year older, and not an hour richer, and responds to the concept of goodwill toward man with the legendary “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future and taken on a whirlwind tour of his life and a preview of the grim fate that awaits him if he continues in his misanthropic ways.

One of the most poignant moments in any telling of “A Christmas Carol” occurs when Scrooge, as a young man, allows the true love of his life, Belle, to walk away forever while the elder Scrooge looks on.

Performances of “A Christmas Carol” are appropriate for theater-goers of all ages.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at www.riversedgetheatre.com or at the door (based on availability).
