PREP ROUNDUP: Kaneland wrestling wins 2 of 3 at own quad
MAPLE PARK – Host Kaneland defeated Belvidere North and Geneva before falling to Rock Island in a wrestling quadrangular Saturday.
"I thought we wrestled very well," Knights coach Monty Jahns said. "We came out, were aggressive, had nonstop motion, good position on the bottom and improved on what we needed to from last week."
While the 42-38 margin of victory against Geneva suggested a close match, Kaneland raced to an initial 42-15 advantage on the strength of falls from Nick Sharp (220 pounds), Adam Mish (106), Stephen Gust (113), Dane Goodenough (126), Esai Ponce (132), Sonny Horn (138) and Dan Goress (145).
Geneva's Brad Martens (120) and Alex Kunkel (160) recorded falls against the Knights, who forfeited the final two weight classes.
"Martens is a tough kid and they've got some solid wrestlers, but the kids who had the opportunity to pin took advantage of it," Jahns said, "and that's what helped us get the win."
Indians fifth at Stillman: Sandwich finished in fifth place at the Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament with a score of 133. The Indians' Jesse Wood took second place at 120 pounds. Rigo Fraire was second at 152 pounds, and Tyler Sebby took second at 195.
Spartans top GBS: Devin Mottet had 21 points to help lead Sycamore to a 66-54 win at Glenbard South. Ben Niemann had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans (6-3), while Nick Feuerbach had 11 and David Compher finished with nine.

Spartans fall in final: Harlem beat Sycamore, 47-39, in the championship of the Harlem Tournament. Bailey Gilbert and Paige Wogen were named to the all-tournament team for the Spartans, who fall to 5-6.
Co-op gets invite win: The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op swim team took first at the York Invite with a score of 398.
Marc Dubrick won the 200 and 500 freestyle races for DeKalb-Sycamore, while Daniel Hein won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Jacob Bjork won the 100 freestyle and took third in the 100 breaststroke, while Ryan Schultz took second in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke for DeKalb-Sycamore.
Dylan Powers was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 50 freestyle.
DeKalb-Sycamore's 200 medley relay of Hein, Bjork, Powers and Josh Page took home a title, while the 200 freestyle relay of Dubrick, Ryan Lindsey, Holden Mackey and Page won as well.
"I just couldn't be more proud of the boys on this team, the effort that they're giving in practice and meets," DeKalb-Sycamore coach Leah Eames said.
DeKalb 8th at own invite: DeKalb knocked down 5,239 pins at the 16th annual DeKalb Holiday Invite, taking eighth place. The Barbs' Jessica Eberly finished second individually with a score of 1,330. Maddy Jouris had a series of 1,147, while Kodilee Underwood finished with a 1,077.
“Jessica bowled her best scores of the season today,” DeKalb coach Bill Holland said. “I continued to rotate seven girls through the five positions in order to develop team unity and bowling experience – thereby sacrificing some scoring punch.”
