DeKalb man wins $200,000 in lottery

Jacob Skala of DeKalb matched all five numbers in a February Little Lotto drawing.
Jacob Skala of DeKalb matched all five numbers in a February Little Lotto drawing.

DeKALB – Jacob Skala checked his winning lottery ticket at the local Jewel Food Store in February but waited 10 months to claim the $200,000 prize.

“When I realized I had won, I just slowly walked out and went home,” Skala said in a news release.

He put the winning ticket in a bank safety deposit box and waited until Dec. 7 – about two months shy of the one-year deadline – to claim his prize in Rockford.

In those 10 months, the name of the game he played changed from Little Lotto to Lucky Day Lotto.

“I don’t like to rush into anything,” Skala told Lottery officials, according to the news release. “I’m a patient person.”

He plans to share some of his winnings with family and put the rest in savings.

In the Feb. 13 drawing, his $1 Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers: 16-21-24-27-28.

Jackpots for the game start at $100,000, and more than 35,000 tickets win daily.

“I like to play Lucky Day Lotto once a week or so and I always get a $1 Quick Pick,” Skala said, according to the lottery’s website. “I think Quick Picks are luckier.”

The Jewel Food Store was given a poster announcing they had sold a winning ticket in February. They also received a $2,000 bonus, or 1 percent of the winning ticket amount.
