DeKALB – The Altgeld Holiday Family Celebration will emphasize recycling from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Northern Illinois President John Peters and his wife, Barbara, host the free event at the castle off College Avenue west of Gilbert Way, according to a news release. Visitors can make crafts out of recyclables, decorate a bird feeder tree, and take home photographs of themselves "being green."

They also can donate items to local wildlife rehabilitation centers and drop-off recyclables, including electronics, batteries, cellular phones and chargers and ink cartridges.

Requested donations for the wildlife centers include: 40- and 60-watt UV light bulbs, wild bird seed, chicken baby food, bleach, liquid laundry detergent, unscented Dawn, unscented hand soap, 9-volt batteries, 30- and 55-gallon garbage bags, Kleenex, paper towels, sponges, storage bins, Velcro, WD-40 and non-latex gloves.
