WOODSTOCK – Genoa-Kingston’s boys basketball team was getting outrebounded early by Woodstock North, but quickly turned things around Tuesday.
With the score tied at 22 in the second quarter and the Cogs in need of a spark, Genoa-Kingston went on a 7-0 run to build a lead they would never relinquish and eventually defeat the Thunder 61-51 in a nonconference game.
“It took us a while to get going out of the gates and usually we’re a little bit better than that,” coach Cory Jenkins said. “With our size we can’t have those starts as far as controlling the boards.”
The teams traded baskets the majority of the second quarter before G-K’s run. The Cogs’ biggest lead came in the third quarter at 45-30.
The Cogs got contributions up and down the roster and saw Sal Lopez return from a foot injury sustained during football season. He finished with 10 points and provided another post option for the Cogs.
“We have some depth and are able to work with things and to see what’s working,” Jenkins said.
Adam Price added 13 points and G-K (5-1) was led by freshman Tommy Lucca’s 19 points.
“Everyone played well,” Lucca said. “We work hard so I think we’re pretty good. Hopefully we can continue this.”
Indian Creek strong in second half: Indian Creek rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to pull away from Dixon for a 58-46 win.
Garrison Govig scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while Garrett Post had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves (6-1). Jaron Todd added 12 points.
“I thought we did a nice job of making some adjustments and pulling away in the fourth quarter,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said.
Indian Creek goes on the road to Serena on Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Morris edges T’wolves: Indian Creek lost another close battle, falling to Morris, 48-44, on the road.
Ariel Russell had 15 points to lead Indian Creek (2-6) while Samantha Mosley chipped in 14 points and collected 13 rebounds.
“We just haven’t had a chance to get everybody healthy,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said. “We were trailing most of the game, got up one in the fourth quarter. We weren’t at full strength.”
G-K loses on road: North Boone defeated Genoa-Kingston, 54-19.
Kate Thurlby led the Cogs with eight points.
“We really got off to a pretty slow start and it was tough for us to recover from that,” G-K Coach Kyle Henkel said. “North Boone provided pressure and they took advantage of our mistakes and scored at the other end.”
BOYS SWIMMING
Co-op wins opener: The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op boys swim team has a goal of going undefeated in dual meets this season and they started off on the right track.
The co-op beat IMSA, 107-76, on the road.
“It was the first meet of the season so it’s a little hard to know what to expect from some of these guys,” co-op coach Leah Eames said. “IMSA is an extremely strong team. I was proud of the boys and how they got in there and fought.”
Freshman Daniel Hein, junior Ryan Schultz, sophomore Dylan Powers and senior Josh Page combined to win the 200-yard medley relay.
Powers, junior Ryan Lindsey, senior Marc Dubrick and Page won the 200 freestyle relay.
Individual winners for the co-op included Dubrick, who won the 200 free and 500 free. Hein won the 100 butterfly in a state-qualifying time, freshman Jacob Bjork took first in the 100 free and Schultz won the 100 breaststroke.
BOYS BOWLING
DeKalb falls to Rochelle: The Barbs lost to NI Big 12 East rival Rochelle, 3,618-3,401. Will Todtz led the Barbs with a 639 series, including games of 227 and 215. Sean Mattingly bowled a 609 series, including a 241 game.
Michael Belluzzi, Ranzy Collins and Seth Pinne also bowled games of 200-plus.
DeKalb plays Sycamore at Four Seasons on Thursday.
