DHS presents 25th annual Madrigal Dinners

The DeKalb High School Music Department will present the 25th annual Madrigal Dinners Dec. 15 and Dec. 21 and 22.

A Madrigal Dinner is an American form of dinner theater often held by schools and church groups during the Christmas season. It is set in the Middle Ages or Renaissance period, and is generally comedic in nature.

This holiday event showcases the DeKalb High School Chamber Choir, an audition-only vocal ensemble of 28 singers directed by DHS Choral Director Travis Erikson. Outfitted in authentic renaissance attire constructed by DHS clothing and textiles students, the choir will perform a variety of a cappella music ranging from traditional Christmas carols to chansons from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Vocal and instrumental groups also performing include troubadours, pages, a brass ensemble, a string quartet, and jesters to entertain.

There will be three Madrigal Dinners offered this year: Dec. 15 at Northern Illinois University’s Altgeld Hall and Dec. 21 and 22 at DeKalb High School. All dinners will start at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the dinner at Altgeld Hall cost $30 for adults and students, and $10 for children age 10 and younger.

The dinners held at DeKalb High School will be catered by Nat’s on Maple and tickets cost $20 for adults and students, and $10 for children.

Call Angel Smith at the DHS Music Department at 815-754-2120 to inquire about the menu and to order tickets by Dec. 5 for the Altgeld Hall dinner and Dec. 17 for the DHS dinners. There are reservation forms available in the main office and on the DeKalb High School website.

Gallery and balcony seating for both events will be available for $5 at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
