Skeletal remains likely Hampshire woman

HAMPSHIRE – Skeletal remains found Friday morning may be a Hampshire woman who went missing in May, Kane County authorities said.

Kathleen S. Wilk, 52, of Hampshire, was last seen May 6 near the Lakewood Crossings subdivision where she lived, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Hampshire police were searching the heavily wooded area behind the Lakewood Crossings subdivision Friday when they found the remains and clothing three houses from Wilk’s home, sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.

County officials have taken over the death investigation.

Authorities were unable to identify the remains as being Wilk’s, but the location was “definitely pointing us in that direction,” Gengler said.

A pathologist with the Kane County Coroner’s Office will compare dental records. The pathologist was out of the office until Monday because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

There are no other people missing from that part of Kane County, Gengler said, although the area is near both McHenry and DeKalb counties.

A cause of death also was not identified, according to the release.

Wilk had attempted suicide at least once before, Gengler said, and a note was found in her home when she initially was reported missing.

Emergency management volunteers, police, firefighters, search dogs and Illinois State Police in an airplane searched for Wilk’s shortly after she disappeared in May, according to a report by the Elgin Courier News.

The wooded area in which she was found, however, “really, really overgrown with a lot of underbrush,” Gengler said. It usually thins out in the fall, which is why police conducted another search.
