Letter: The SEIU vs. Walmart
To the Editor:
With all the hoopla going on at Walmart and some airports, particularly on Black Friday, between the outsiders, the new domestic left-wing army (also known as the Service Employees International Union), and the Wal-Mart company, the uninvited SEIU is intruding into the relationship between Walmart and its employees.
A little reality might be in order. First of all, having worked in retail all of my life beginning as a low-wage employee and later on as an employer, I know something about what I am saying. The propaganda being promoted that these union outsiders, that the SEIU cares about the current Walmart employees couldn’t be more untrue.
If they had it their way, wages would increase sharply, prices would go up a lot, hurting lots of low-income people, and most of the current employees would be replaced with different people with a different level of qualifications.
No employer is perfect, not even Walmart, but in retail, for the most part, Walmart is very competitive and never has had a problem getting people to work for them. Anyone of normal intelligence should be able to figure this out.
They must be doing something right!
That something right is this: Walmart gives lots of talented people good jobs, who due to their own special circumstances might not have a chance to work at all, and that is worth a lot.
What the SEIU really wants is more dues from a lot more people to funnel to their politician friends. That is the unvarnished truth.
John Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” seems to have given way to a new mantra, one that is so different. The new manta is “Give me more or I will hurt you.”
I wonder where this new attitude will take us as a country? If you aren’t worried, maybe you should pay attention. It isn’t that hard to see what is happening!
