Prep roundup: Sycamore girls basketball takes fourth at tourney
Sycamore girls basketball took fourth place at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving tournament after falling, 38-34, to Harlem in the third-place game on Wednesday.
Sophomore Bailey Gilbert led the Spartans with 21 points and was later named to the All-Tournament team. Paige Wogen was also honored as part of the All-Tournament team.
“We had our chances in the fourth quarter,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said. “We’re learning as a young team how to close out games late.”
The Spartans are 2-2 on the season and play at Rochelle on Nov. 30 in their first Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference game.
BOYS BOWLING
Sycamore edges DeKalb: Sycamore took the three-game series, 3,410-3,357, over DeKalb at Mardi Gras Lanes on Wednesday.
Sycamore’s Tony Cusamano led the Spartans with a 614 series that included games of 224 and 220. Kyle Bunnell had a 603 series with a single-game high score of 236 while Collin Eggleson bowled a 223 for his high game.
DeKalb was led by Michael Belluzzi’s 647 series, including a single-game high of 238, and Seth Pinne contributed a 618 series.
DeKalb’s next meet is Nov. 27 against Rochelle at Mardi Gras Lanes.
WRESTLING
Spartans post two wins: Sycamore put together dominating wins over Hampshire and LaSalle-Peru on Wednesday. The Spartans defeated Hampshire, 66-7, and downed LaSalle-Peru, 62-9.
Sycamore lost only two individual contests in each match.
Barbs win opener: DeKalb defeated Oswego East, 51-15, in its opening match of the season.
Doug Johnson, Brad Green, Nick Roach and Brenden McGee each won with falls.
