Nearly 100 volunteers give of their gifts and talents to present the annual Christmas Choral Celebration at Sycamore United Methodist Church. This year’s production, “One Child,” begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2 and features the Adult Choir, Junior and Youth Choir, and many small groups, instrumentalists and soloists.
The music highlights a wide variety of styles, ranging from Vivaldi’s “Gloria” to Mariah Carey’s “One Child,” and ends with a rousing gospel version of “This Little Light of Mine.” The songs are often enhanced with PowerPoint presentations, dancers or instruments such as flute, violin, cello and oboe. Craig Fritz is the 40-voice Adult Choir accompanist. Some of the small groups include the popular Good News! Men’s Quartet, directed by Doug Elder; Marcia and Paul Watson in harmony with Phyllis Horst; and men’s and women’s trios.
Carols and congregational singing are an important part of the program as well.
There will be a free-will offering for Heifer International and Africa University. The music program has raised many thousands of dollars for Heifer International over the past several years, which has helped people worldwide receive an animal and agricultural training to help improve their economic standing. One of the inspiring parts of Heifer International is that the family who receives the animal is asked to pass on the first offspring to another needy family. Africa University provides training in agriculture, music, spiritual growth and many other subjects in Zimbabwe.
Cookies and child care will be provided both evenings. For more information, contact music director Bev Rauch or the church office at 815-895-9113.
