Hiawatha’s girls basketball lost a heart-breaker in its season-opening game against Woodlands Academy on Thursday.
The Hawks took the lead on a free throw by Ashley Tamraz with 37 seconds remaining, but Woodlands scored on the following possession and came away with a 38-37 win.
“We had a slow start and we were playing a catch-up game,” Hiawatha coach Franz Schumacher said. “It was an exciting game, we just took too long to get going.”
Dani Clark led the Hawks with 13 points. Savannah Campbell chipped in with eight and Tamraz had seven points for Hiawatha.
The Hawks continue play in the Elgin Tournament against host Elgin Academy at 5 p.m. today.
“We’re just shaking the rust,” Schumacher said. “We’ll be okay.”
H-BR picks up second win: The Royals defeated Wheaton Academy, 39-23, to even their record at 2-2 early in the season.
Lauren Paver led H-BR with 12 points while Bridgette Edmeier had eight points and Jacqueline Madden had six. Abbie Tosch also chipped in six points for H-BR.
G-K wins opener: Genoa-Kingston won its season-opening game, 35-28, over Round Lake as part of the Harvard Tournament. Tori Hensely had 11 points to lead the Cogs while Kate Thurlby recorded 10 points for G-K. Danielle Engel had six points in the win.
“It was a rough game,” G-K coach Kyle Henkel said. “Shooting wasn’t going down for us, but we stuck it out on defense.”
G-K plays Rockford East tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Harvard.
Somonauk gets first win: Somonauk defeated Westminster Christian, 50-34, for the Bobcats’ first win of the season.
They outscored Westminster Christian by 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Allison Humes led the Bobcats (1-2) with 23 points, including 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.
Ashlee Kawall chipped in with 13 points while Emily Clark recorded six steals and Katie Pelase pulled down seven rebounds.
Somonauk plays Sandwich tonight.
Sycamore defeats Dixon: Sycamore beat Dixon, 3691-3663, at home. The Spartans were led by Brendan Fank with a 716 series, including a high single-game score of 254. Tony Cusamano had a 636 series and a high game of 233.
Earlier in the week, Sycamore defeated Rochelle and Zack Kroeger contributed with a high game of 289.
Barbs sweep Ottawa: DeKalb rebounded from a tough loss Wednesday to defeat Ottawa, 3494-3121.
The Barbs were led by Seth Pinne, who recorded a 651 series, including games of 236 and 234. Sean Mattingly contributed with a 644 series, including games of 245 and 210. Will Todtz had a single-game high of 225.
On Wednesday DeKalb lost a tight three-game series to Streator, 3298-3261.
Pinne led DeKalb with a 605 series, recording a single-game high score of 233. Michael Belluzzi (201) also contributed for DeKalb.
DeKalb plays Sycamore at Mardi Gras Lanes on Nov. 21.
