Deal pleads not guilty to home invasion, battery

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man charged with breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home and attacking her boyfriend pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Norvelle Deal, 27, of the 900 block of Crane Drive in DeKalb, was arraigned in DeKalb County court on charges of aggravated battery, residential burglary and home invasion. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Police said Deal broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment Aug. 22 and struck her new boyfriend in the head several times with a handgun.

Aggravated battery is a Class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in prison. Residential burglary is a Class 1 felony punishable by seven to 15 years in prison; probation is not a sentencing option for that charge. Home invasion is a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Public defender Charles Criswell, speaking on behalf of Deal, requested a jury trial. The trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 25.
