2012 Boys Golf All Area Team

Check out who made the list

First Team

Curt Buzzard

Sycamore, senior

A sixth-place finish at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and team MVP highlighted the senior year for Buzzard, who was also the Spartans’ most improved player as he collected medalist honors in 10 of 17 meets.

“If you watch Curt during a round you never know how he’s doing,” Sycamore coach Dave Burdick said. “It doesn’t bother him if he starts 3-or-4-over par. He’ll still come in plus-1.”

Brody Kuhar

Kaneland junior

The No. 2 player on a loaded Knights team would have played No. 1 on many rosters with the premium his game places on accuracy and scoring. He fired off a 73 at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Tournament to take home medalist honors and help defend the Knights’ title.

“It was a fantastic year for Brody,” Kaneland coach Mark Meyer said. “He’s a grinder. A par guy. He’s not long, but is straight and steady.”

Austin Scott

Hinckley-Big Rock senior

Scott had a break-through senior season that featured a first-place finish at the Little Ten Conference Tournament, berth in the Class 1A Elgin Westminster sectional and team MVP.

“After a 50 on his front 9 at regionals, Austin had a hot dog at the turn and frustratedly said his season was over,” H-BR coach Rod Jandt said. “I told him with that attitude it would be, but try to go out and shoot something low like a 42 and that’s what he did. He ground out a 42 on the back 9 to qualify for sectionals.”

Matt Yonkovich

Kaneland junior

The Knights 2012 MVP and Class 2A Sycamore Regional medalist, whose score counted in every dual meet, should be even better next season after a slew of offseason tournaments.

“Matt has the talent and ability,” Meyer said. “He’s now got the ability to stick with the game mentally. He can gather himself if he doesn’t get off to a great start. He’s got the ability to play at a very high level in college.”
