Family Dollar coming to Browns’ County Market

SYCAMORE – On the final day of operation for the Genoa Browns’ County Market location, owner Dan Brown announced Family Dollar would be coming to his Sycamore location.

The Family Dollar location will set up its business in about 9,000 square feet of existing space in the Sycamore Browns’ County Market. Brown said an interior wall would be built so the stores would not directly connect. An additional outdoor entrance would be used to enter Family Dollar.

He said he hopes both stores are able to attract more customers by operating in close proximity. He compared it to fast-food restaurants that operate next to each other.

“They are a growing company and they have a great brand ... so if they are going to come to town anyway, why not have them next to you?” Brown said. “Hopefully we can feed off each other.”

Brown said he expects construction of the store to begin after Thanksgiving.

Thursday also marked the final day of operation for the Genoa Browns’ County Market. The company invested $4 million into the location when it opened in 2005. Brown said the economic downturn hurt the business in 2009 when sales dropped to 2005 levels and the business never recovered.

“We, as supermarket operators, take responsibility for not doing something to garner the support of the Genoa community to make it their supermarket of choice,” he said in a written statement. “Unfortunately, we never achieved the sales needed to succeed.”

Eggleston’s Pharmacy in the Genoa location will remain open.
