Kish College shows off its new wing

MALTA – Kishwaukee College is celebrating the opening of its new student wing this week with raffles and special events.

The new wing includes a game room for students to hook up their game consoles, a cafeteria and a large student lounge, spokeswoman Kayte Hamel said.

“The student center is housing all of the functions for students,” Hamel said. “It’s meant to be the front door to the campus.”

The new wing was possible because of a referendum voters approved in November 2010, allowing the college to issue $52.6 million in capital improvement bonds.

The college is in the process of adding classrooms and science labs to the building, Hamel said.

Opening celebrations were held at the new wing Monday and will continue today to accommodate students who may attend on certain days.

“It was created to be their space,” Hamel said.

A 40 percent discount on clothing in the college bookstore and raffle drawings will occur there every hour.

Free food will be dispensed at the cafeteria, and the registration office is holding a scavenger hunt promotion that could net students a three-credit hour tuition waiver.

Not returning today is the photo booth, in which students lined up to take free pictures of themselves with their friends.

Jonathon West, a first-year Kishwaukee student looking to become a veterinarian, was lined up for the booth with his aunt,
CaryAnn West. CaryAnn West was dressed in the college’s mascot suit.

“It’s a good look for the whole college,” Jonathon West said of the new wing.

The new wing led to the creation of a courtyard between the two parts of the building, which CaryAnn West described as being “very welcoming.”
