DeKALB – Residents could get an extra hour of sleep this weekend, and local fire officials want to make sure it is a safe sleep.
Daylight saving time comes to an end Sunday at 2 a.m., meaning residents should move their clocks back one hour and take that time to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, said Jim Ward, fire prevention education coordinator for the Sycamore Fire Department.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, 40 percent of fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms and 23 percent occur in homes with no working smoke alarm.
“One of the things we always hear with deadly fires is there was no working smoke detectors, and it’s always sad when we hear that,” Ward said. “We want people checking smoke detectors every month, but they should be changing batteries at least every six months.”
For sufficient safety, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be placed on every level of a home. Additional smoke detectors should be placed in bedrooms and outside each sleeping area. The state fire marshal recommends placing smoke detectors away from windows and doors and never painting them because it could affect performance.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine also said the extra hour Sunday is a great time for many sleep-deprived people to catch up on a permanent basis.
Sam Fleishman, a board-certified sleep physician who serves as AASM president, said for people who normally sleep from midnight to 6 a.m. for six hours, going to bed at 11 p.m. after the time change will add the extra hour while the body still feels as if it is midnight.
“It’s a once-a year-opportunity to reset your body clock for an extra hour of sleep every night,” he said in a statement.
