U of I considers dropping some Ph.D. programs

URBANA – Trustees who oversee the University of Illinois are expected next week to consider cutting some of the nearly 100 doctoral programs offered at its flagship campus in Urbana.

A committee has been reviewing the programs for a year and put together a list of programs recommended for closure.

Graduate College Dean Debasish Dutta declined to disclose the programs on the list. But Dutta told The News-Gazette newspaper in Champaign that the faculty members who conducted the review focused on the effectiveness of the programs.
