Published: Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

St. Johns Lutheran Church, 235 S. Green St., Somonauk, will host its fifth annual International Holiday Market from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10.

Shop for handcrafted jewelry, scarves, items for the home, creches, stained glass, wood and other holiday ornaments, baskets, pottery, gifts for children, textiles and purses, coffee, tea, chocolate and more.

Purchases of items at St. John’s “global” market support farmers and artisans from around the world. These handcrafted items are classified as fairly traded goods thanks to retailers who purchase directly from artisans, enabling them to receive a fair wage for their work.

At the market shopper also can purchase a children’s booklet about a mission project in Peru and ELCA Good Gifts -- alternative gifts such as baby chicks, goats, pigs and other farm animals which will help agriculture in third world nations.

The area’s largest bake sale will take place at the market and a home-cooked lunch will be available for donation between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Proceeds from the lunch benefit the Sandwich/ Somonauk/Leland Area food pantry with matching funds up to $750 will be provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans DeKalb Co. Chapter 31085.

Proceeds from the bake sale and other income from sales at this event benefit local, national and international organizations that work to provide help, healing and hope to individuals worldwide through programs and training that alleviate hunger and poverty. Payment can be made by check or cash.
