Letter: I understand role of regional superintendent of education

To the Editor:

My name is Derek Avery. I am the Republican candidate for regional superintendent of schools. I currently serve as regional superintendent, having been appointed July 1 by the DeKalb County Board to replace Gil Morrison upon his retirement after holding the position for nine years.

Prior to being appointed, I served as Morrison’s assistant regional superintendent for a year. Before coming to the Regional Office of Education, I taught math and coached baseball and football at Sandwich High School for 15 years.

I believe school is for kids. One of my roles as regional superintendent is to provide support to locally elected school board members in their endeavor of educating our students, not to tell them how.

Other roles of my office include: Providing services to all of our constituents; assuring the public that school districts are abiding by the law; serving as a liaison between the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts; meeting regularly with district superintendents to share information and learn the needs of their districts; advocating for local districts with legislators; and providing staff development and school improvement services through the KIDS (Kishwaukee Intermediate Delivery System).

I am committed to safe schools, qualified teachers and constituency services. I insist that school districts follow the law, and I am there to aid them in doing so. My commitment to the people and school districts of DeKalb County was tested and proven during my first five months at the Regional Office of Education when I performed my duties without compensation because of the governor’s veto of salaries for regional superintendents and assistants.

I am the right candidate for this position because of my administrative experience that includes truancy intervention, assisting homeless students, monitoring home-school students, GED administration, providing school bus driver training, conducting school building inspections, monitoring and assisting teacher certification, school district compliance visits, budget and expenditure reporting, grant writing, various reporting systems with the Illinois State Board of Education and managing office staff.

As the candidate with an understanding of the position’s role, a commitment to the people and school districts of DeKalb County and my administrative experience, I am asking for your vote Tuesday.

Thank you for your support.

Derek Avery

Regional superintendent of schools
