Still time for absentee, early voting
SYCAMORE – DeKalb County is seeing its largest pre-Election Day voting turnout ever, DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder John Acardo said.
As of Tuesday, 5,300 people had voted in DeKalb County. The traditional period of early voting began Oct. 22 and ends at noon Saturday.
Acardo believes 22 to 25 percent of those expected to vote will do so before Tuesday.
“That’s very strong,” he said.
Four years ago, 6,777 people voted before Election Day, and Acardo thinks this year’s total could surpass that if such strong turnout continues these next few days.
Other counties are seeing similar numbers, Acardo said, with lines at some early-voting locations close to Chicago.
“It’s just becoming more popular. You can vote on your own timetable, your own schedule,” he said of pre-Election Day voting.
And election officials have responded by adding more early-voting locations. Four years ago, early voting occurred only in Sycamore. Locations in Sandwich, Kirkland and DeKalb were added this year, Acardo said.
Anyone can vote early at the DeKalb County legislative building and Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center. The Sandwich Fire Protection District at 310 E. Railroad St. and Kirkland Village Hall at 511 W. Main St. locations are only able to accept ballots from voters in those regions. Those voting early must bring photo identification.
No reason is needed to vote prior to Election Day, Acardo said. Today is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail, so Acardo’s office must receive absentee applications today. An absentee ballot must be postmarked by Monday.
For those who have not registered, grace-period registration and voting occurs at the same time, and that ends at noon Saturday. Grace-period registration and voting can be done in Sycamore or at Northern Illinois University.
In-person absentee voting can be done between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday in Sycamore. On Election Day, polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voters are encouraged to bring a form of identification when voting. At votedekalb.com, voters can find their polling place and sample ballot based on district.
