Letter: Matekaitis’ career of
service speaks volumes

To the Editor:

One of the more interesting local races is between Judge Ron Matekaitis and Judge Bill Brady. Both are associate judges, appointed to their present positions. Both are seeking election to succeed Judge Kurt Klein, who is retiring. Judge Klein had served as the chief judge of this circuit for many years. He will be missed.

Although both Ron and Bill are fine judges and worthy successors to Judge Klein, I support Ron Matekaitis and encourage support for his candidacy.

Ron is a lifelong DeKalb County citizen. He and his family have worked hard to make this a better place to live. Ron was a leader while in the Student Association at NIU in the 1970s. He has served as an alderman in the city of DeKalb. He also served as a DeKalb County Board member, and while doing so, helped initiate the county’s environmental program.

Ron graduated from the Northern Illinois University College of Law, his competence being recognized when he was selected as attorney for the city of DeKalb. Ron served with distinction as the longest-tenured DeKalb city attorney.

Ron was eventually elected three times as DeKalb County state’s attorney, which was a reflection of the fine job he did. In recognition of his skills, he was selected judge by the other judges of the circuit despite the fact he was a Democrat when most judges were Republicans.

As an attorney licensed for more than 40 years (now semiretired) who has known Ron for nearly that long, including a period when I served as an alderman in DeKalb while Ron was city attorney, I feel justified in encouraging folks to consider his candidacy. He would be a terrific circuit judge.

As a reflection on Judge Matekaitis’ sense of ethics, he refuses financial contributions from attorneys or their spouses. In addition, he does not wish to know the names of contributors to his campaign. This is indeed a wonderful reflection on his sense of fairness. He deserves our support.
