Letter: Hanson can keep county government running lean

Published: Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

I would like to comment on the unique skill set that James Hanson has to offer voters in County Board District 2 and DeKalb County as a whole.

Hanson is an expert in lean manufacturing, the science of efficient operations management popularized by the Toyota Method and now the gold standard for all top manufacturers worldwide.

In the 1970s and ‘80s, General Motors would allow its production to be completed even when a defect had occurred early in the process. This required huge increases in wasted time and money to disassemble the whole vehicle to fix what would have been a simple problem if caught at the time.

Sound like government? Too often we allow what would be small costs on the front end to escalate into large ones downstream. This is an opportunity for us to put someone into government who knows how to get more out of less, and to maximize quality while minimizing cost.
