The Kishwaukee College Library will host a presentation on outlaws of Illinois titled “Desperadoes: Notorious Outlaws of Early Illinois” at 7 p.m. Monday in Room L202 at the library.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
The presenter will be scholar John Hallwas. A native of Macomb, Hallwas spent 10 years doing the research for his historical book “Dime Novel Desperadoes: The Notorious Maxwell Brothers,” which won the Midland Award for Best Biography from the Midwest in 2009.
Hallwas, a professor at Western Illinois University, has written or edited two dozen books related to the Midwest. His Kishwaukee College presentation will cover the early frontier lawbreakers at Cave-in-Rock as well as such figures as the Maxwell brothers and Frank Rande, who died in the 1880s. Illinois, prior to the 20th century, was a dangerous place fraught with crime and Hallwas will take listeners into Illinois’ notorious past to learn about early law enforcement, vigilantes and more through dozens of images, featuring outlaws, jails and wanted posters.
