Brazilian lithographs on display at Art Box

During the month of November, The Art Box in DeKalb will host contemporary Brazilian lithographs from the collection of Robert Bornhuetter, professor emeritus in printmaking from the Northern Illinois University School of Art. An opening reception and gallery talk is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Bornhuetter took approximately 12 trips to Brazil between 1986 and 2003. The population of Sao Paulo in 1986 was estimated at 12 million people – today it exceeds 20 million. Bornhuetter was expecting to see an airport with a thatched Jowood tower, dirt runways, outdated biplanes and sparse parking. On the contrary, he found a large modern facility, modern highways, ample parking and several large airlines. Going into the city from the airport suburb, he was amazed at the 180-degree view of 15- to 20-story structures and the abundance of shops, eating places and shopping areas.

The purpose of his first visit was to appear at an artist studio, Glatt/Ymagos Atelier d’Arte, to realize the publication of several editions of lithographic and intaglio prints. After 12 trips to Brazil, Bornhuetter collected more than 60 different editions of his art as well as making a lot of friends. He was able to exchange prints with fellow artists, helping him to establish a worthy and varied collection of art he now has the opportunity to exhibit.
