Prep roundup: DeKalb junior Schrader wins cross country sectional

DeKalb junior Kelsey Schrader won the Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional with a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds. She qualified for the state meet next weekend.

“My goal coming into it was to break 17 [minutes]. This race is a lot a fun because it was a pack most of the way. It wasn’t until the last 400 yards that I was able to breakaway. The last 400 is all downhill so I was sprinting hard as I could. When I saw the clock it was 16:48 and it kept ticking. I did not want to get 17 [minutes] so I sprinted as hard as I could.”

The Barbs finished 10th as a team.

Kaneland girls advance: Kaneland took third place at the Class 2A Belvidere Sectional and qualified as a team for the state meet next weekend.

The Knights were led by a second-place finish by Victoria Clinton, who crossed the line in 17:38. Brianna Bower, Abby Dodis, Sydney Strang and Amanda Lesak also scored for Kaneland.

“Finishing third in the toughest 2A sectional in the state capped off a great year that saw the girls win the regional, finish second in the conference and win two invitational championships,” Kaneland coach Doug Ecker said.

Dubrick qualifies: DeKalb senior Marc Dubrick qualified for the Class 3A state cross country championships by finishing 10th Saturday at the St. Charles East Sectional.

Dubrick was the only boys runner to qualify from DeKalb, which finished 12th as a team.

“The time [15:17.1] wasn’t awful; I was only off 10 or 11 seconds off my best time,” Dubrick said. “After I hit the two mile, it just hit me. Going down that hill, our coach kept saying ‘work it, work it’ and I had nothing left. More people passed me going down that hill.”

Kaneland takes fifth: The Knights qualified as a team for the Class 2A state cross country meet by taking fifth place at the Belvidere Sectional.

Kyle Carter led the Knights with a time of 15:42 while Conor Johnson (15:51) also broke the 16-minute mark. John Meisenger, Luis Acosta and Nathaniel Kucera also figured in the scoring for Kaneland.

“Our pack made the difference for us today, running right at 60 seconds,” Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said. “Our seniors stepped up, like they often do.”

Stice moves on: Sycamore’s Mark Stice advanced to the Class 2A state championships by taking 12th place at the Belvidere Sectional with a time of 15:39.

Sycamore finished ninth as a team at the meet.

Co-op 3rd in conference: The DeKalb / Sycamore co-op swim team took third at its conference meet this weekend.

“It was a really fun meet, the girls had some great swims, especially for JV who were tapered and trained for conference,” co-op coach Leah Eames said. “We’re just really looking forward to sectionals. That’s coming up in two weeks.”

The 400-yard freestyle relay of Alexa Miller, Kylie Olson, Bailey Flemming and Jensen Keck took second place. Individually, Olson was second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 individual medley. Alexa Miller took third place in the 200 free and 100 butterfly.

Freshman Jensen Keck was third in the 500 free and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Natalie Carlson took fourth place in both the 200 IM and 100 fly. Flemming was fifth in the 100 free and 200 free.
