DeKALB — Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred early Friday on Normal Road in DeKalb.

DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police responded to a report of a sexual assault that occurred about 3 a.m. today in the 900 block of Normal Road, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

The victim reported being battered and forcibly restrained. Police believe the suspect is a black male, according to the news release.

Police urge residents to be aware of their surroundings and keep others informed of plans and expected return times. Carry a cell phone and keep it readily available in case of emergencies. Don't leave drinks unattended at social functions.

Police also note residents shouldn't be afraid to ask for security escorts to their cars. Once there, check to make sure no one is in the car or around it.

Don't rummage through a purse or check voicemails with car doors unlocked; this is a common time for an attacker to make a move, according to the news release.
