NIU student sexually assaulted early Friday
DeKALB – Police were investigating on Friday a sexual assault that occurred early that morning on Normal Road in DeKalb.
DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police responded to a report of a sexual assault that occurred at about 3 a.m. Friday in the 900 block of Normal Road.
The victim, an NIU student, reported being battered and forcibly restrained. DeKalb police Sgt. Bob Redel said police believe the suspect is a black male wearing a dark shirt and dark jeans.
Redel said police don't have a good description of the suspect because it was dark. They are looking for surveillance video that might have captured the assault.
The victim was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for her injuries, Redel said.
Police urge residents to be aware of their surroundings and keep others informed of plans and expected return times, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department. They should carry a cellphone and keep it readily available in case of emergencies. They also shouldn't leave drinks unattended at social functions.
Police also noted that residents shouldn't be afraid to ask for security escorts to their cars. Once there, they should check to make sure no one is in the car or around it.
Don't rummage through a purse or check voicemails with car doors unlocked; this is a common time for an attacker to make a move, according to the news release.
