Letter: Christensen has passion for educating students

To the Editor:

I’m writing this letter to encourage voters to elect Amanda Christensen to the office of regional superintendent of schools in DeKalb County. As Amanda’s significant other, I am biased. I do, however, think that affords me a perspective that others don’t see.

In the time I have known Amanda, I have seen her devotion to her family, professional development and work. Amanda is the loving and supportive mother of two children, both students at DeKalb High School. She is pursuing her doctorate in educational administration at Northern Illinois University. In her time as a union leader, she earned the respect of teachers, administrators and school board members.

She has been a leader in new teacher mentoring, a co-teaching program in partnership with NIU, school improvement team as well as other professional development programs. I see her desire as a teacher for students to receive the best education possible. I love to see the smile on her face as she tells how a class is learning and enjoying it. I also have seen how touched she has been after hearing from former students of how she affected their lives and their desire for further education.

In the classroom, Amanda has the opportunity to reach a couple of hundred students each year. As regional superintendent, she would be able to help every student in DeKalb County have a better and safer educational career.

Since announcing her candidacy, Amanda has met with many administrators and has attended many school board meetings across the county. She wants to know the specific issues that all of our schools face, what they expect from the regional office, and, if elected, what her office can do to start helping them immediately.

Her opponent is running as a Republican. Amanda is a Democrat. I hope that voters won’t let a (D) or an (R) next to a name decide their vote, but instead vote for the person who can do the best for our students.

I hope you will agree with me that person is Amanda Christensen.
