CLC presents awards, elects officers

Published: Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

Children’s Learning Center, a private nonprofit day care center, held its annual meeting Oct. 16. The CLC board of directors elected Jeffrey Myles president, Katherine Gannon vice president, Vicki Maertz secretary and Scott R. Erwin treasurer.

Child care quality is linked to caregiver experience, and the CLC board of directors honors staff members for every five years of employment at the center. This year, Tracie Maillet and Wendy Wakeland received 10-year awards, Lynn Kohley a 25-year award and Ken Rodd a 35-year award.

As her last official act, outgoing President Diane Lizer conferred President’s Awards on Martha Maxstadt and Nicole Berns as this year’s distinguished staff members.

Each year, CLC confers the Mandy Derrington Friend of the Child Award on a person or persons who act on behalf of children. The board presented its 2012 award to Ken Rodd in recognition of his ongoing efforts to teach safe cycling, to repair children’s bicycles and to give bikes to children and adults who need them.

The evening’s featured speaker was Bill Buczinsky, a poet and teacher trainer who is the author of “Strange World, A Poetic Journey.”
