To the Editor:
I am Amanda Christensen and I am running for Regional Superintendent of Schools. Voters need to know a few things about me and some differences between my opponent and me.
I have several years in leadership positions in critical areas of school improvement, teacher evaluation, Response to Intervention (providing individual student supports), curriculum and assessment, safety task forces, and new teacher induction/mentoring. I provide professional development to aspiring educators in higher education, teachers, and administrators, and I coach adult learners on best practices for schools.
I am proud of my experience with my union. Those years of being president of DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association through two contract negotiations, labor-management disputes, and sensitive personnel issues allow me to bring multiple perspectives to the regional office and increase my ability to facilitate solutions with varied groups of stakeholders. I am known by teachers, administrators, and school board members alike as a communicator and a collaborator.
My desire to foster collaboration across DeKalb County will be evident with my search for an assistant superintendent. Although I have many qualified friends, I will not bring someone in just because I know them. I will search for the most qualified candidate and forge a partnership with someone who balances my strengths and background.
I am dedicated to increasing parental involvement for the sake of improving our students’ educational experiences and keeping them in school. This requires a level of visibility and accessibility that has not been evident in the DeKalb ROE. I am dedicated to educational equity and am focused on providing resources for economically disadvantaged students. In addition to helping schools academically perform, I also support social-emotional learning, bullying prevention, character development, and creating productive citizens.
It is a shame that many voters do not know what the regional superintendent is supposed to do when the job duties include providing information to citizens about educational issues. I am asking that voters seriously consider who they want coming into their schools, working with families of all cultural backgrounds, supporting administrators, and being the voice and face in Springfield for this constituency. I believe voters will make the smart choice for safer and smarter schools. Choose me – someone who has followed a focused career plan of being a professional educational leader. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
Vote for me, Amanda Christensen, for Regional Superintendent of Schools.
