Thanks for supporting education

To the Editor:

The DeKalb Education Foundation wants to thank the many individuals and area businesses that supported our efforts during the past year to raise monies used to enrich the educational programs in our local schools.

This past year, nearly $50,000 was raised through our mail solicitation, annual Comedy Night, and other fundraising events. With these monies, the foundation was able to respond to grant requests from District 428 teachers and instructional staff to augment what is already available within our schools. A total of $44,000 was awarded in response to the grant requests we received. In addition, the DeKalb Education Foundation awarded scholarships to eight graduating DeKalb High seniors who are continuing their education by pursuing degrees at colleges, universities and community colleges. Without the generous support of our local community, none of this would have been possible. Our most sincere thanks!

With the start of the current academic year, the DeKalb Education Foundation has begun its fundraising activities. Many of our District 428 school staff are already contributing through a payroll deduction available to them. The foundation also has begun to receive contributions from individuals within the local community. If readers are interested in learning more about the DeKalb Education Foundation or would like to make a donation, they can check our website, www.dekalbeducationfoundation.org.

Again, our sincere appreciation to the many individuals and area businesses that have recognized the value and importance of investing in our schools. We thank you and look forward to your continued support.

Lions Candy Day a big success

To the Editor:

The Kirkland Lions Club would like to extend a huge thank-you to all the generous people in the Kirkland and surrounding area for helping make the Lions Club Candy Day a huge success.

Candy Day is an annual fundraising event to help area residents with their vision and hearing needs. While stationed outside downtown Kirkland businesses, as well as the intersection of Glidden Road and Route 72, the Lions Club team collected $2,000 from very generous passers-by.

We would again like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who donated to this very worthy cause.

Jim Woodward, Chairman
