Letter: Support Derek Avery for regional superintendent

To the Editor:

As we get closer to the Nov. 6 election, it is critical that all citizens study the issues and the candidates and exercise their right to vote.

One local candidate I strongly encourage you to support is Derek Avery for DeKalb County regional superintendent of schools. The Regional Office of Education has proven to be a great partner with local schools in providing the best possible education for all of DeKalb County students, and Derek has the experience and background to continue in his role as regional superintendent.

Prior to my retirement, I selected Derek Avery 1½ years ago to be my assistant regional superintendent because of his experience and leadership skills in education. It proved to be a good choice because he continued to work to improve the truancy program and streamline the inspection of school buildings for health and life safety while not getting a paycheck for five months because of the governor’s misguided decision to defund the regional offices’ budget line.

Derek Avery’s commitment to the education of DeKalb County’s students proved to be his No. 1 priority.

Local elections are just as important as national elections, and I strongly encourage everyone to get out and vote. I will be voting for Derek Avery to continue in his office as regional superintendent of schools for DeKalb County.

Gil Morrison

Retired regional superintendent of schools, DeKalb County
