A windy day made it tough for all golfers on the first day of the IHSA Class 2A state golf championships. Kaneland, making its first trip to state as a team since 1996, finished the day at 57-over par, good for 10th place out of 12 teams.

Matt Yonkovich led the Knights with an 83 while Connor Williams and Luke Kreiter each shot 85 for Kaneland. Brody Kuhar's 88 also figured in the scoring.

Sean Glennon shot 92 while Dan Miller finished at 95 as the Knights' other two golfers.

Emily Wakeley, playing as the first girls golfer from Genoa-Kingston to ever qualify for the state championships, shot 89 in her opening round of the girls Class A state championships. Wakeley, who started on the back nine, shot 44 on her opening nine holes, including a birdie on No. 18. Wakeley closed her round with a 45, making pars on three of her final four holes.

Wakeley's score puts her in the middle of the pack out of 111 golfers in the Class A championship.
