To the Editor:
I am Misty Haji-Sheikh and I am running for County Board in District 7. I have lived in DeKalb for 10 years. I am very involved in our community. I serve on several boards and committees, and I am a part-time student at NIU, where my daughter is also a student and my husband is a professor.
Who is the County Board? The County Board is made up of 24 people from 12 districts – you get to vote for two members from each district. What does the County Board do? The County Board makes the decisions on county roads and bridges, county health care, economic development, county jails and courts, the county forest district and planning and zoning.
I believe we can do better in attracting and keeping good-paying jobs. We can be on the forefront as corporations bring their business back from overseas. We need to support the businesses we currently have, both large and small.
And we can do better in communication, both between governmental bodies and with you. By working closer together we can make the dollars we have go further. Simple low- or no-cost ways to improve communication include effectively using social media such as Facebook, Twitter and adding QR codes to printed material that will give instant access to the county website.
We can do better by letting you know where to vote. Do you know that you can still register to vote in DeKalb, and yes, there is still time to register? Here are the facts: 1) You may register if you are a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of DeKalb for 30 days, and have two forms of ID – including a driver’s license or student ID – and a utility bill, lease, etc., with your address. 2) You can still register to vote during the grace period of Oct. 10 to Nov. 3 for this year’s election. 3) To find out where you vote and who is on your ballot, go to www.votedekalb.com.
During the grace period, you must vote at the same time you register.
As your County Board member, I will work hard to improve the quality of life in DeKalb County because I know that together, we can do better.
I appreciate your vote.
