Prep roundup: Cogs cruise to semifinal win

Devon Tijerina, Juan Lechuga and Tommy Hansen each had two goals for Genoa-Kingston in the Cogs’ 7-0 win over St. Martin de Porres in the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston Regional semifinals.

Cris Camargo had the other goal for the Cogs, who improved to 13-6-1.

G-K will play the winner of today’s match between Hiawatha and Chicagoland Jewish on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“We had a nice balanced attack tonight with several players getting into the attacking third of the field and finishing their shots,” G-K coach Randy Tate said. “Our defense played strong also. We were able to limit them to a few long-range shots and no real quality looks at goal. Overall, I thought it was a good team effort.”

DeKalb earns shutout: Zack Dixson-Smith and Sean Woodford had goals for DeKalb in a 2-0 win over Rochelle. Woodford and Skyler Weishaar had the assists for the Barbs, who improved to 10-2-5 and 7-1-1 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

“We made a couple adjustments at halftime and that kind of loosened up Rochelle’s defense for us, and we were able to get that second goal early,” DeKalb coach Brent McIntosh said.

Knights get NI Big 12 win: Anthony Parillo scored the game-winning goal for Kaneland in a 2-1 win over Yorkville. Kushstrim Ismaili had the other score for the Knights (12-3-2, 6-2-1 NI Big 12 East) with an assist from Parillo.

T’Wolves eliminated: Earlville-Leland beat Indian Creek, 1-0 in double overtime of the Class 1A Indian Creek Regional semifinal.

Aaron Bolton made 20 saves for the Timberwolves (8-14).

“We came out and gave it everything we had against the top seed in our regional. We were trying to draw an offsides in the first OT and our outside defender apparently kept their guy onsides and he was able to go 1-on-1 with our keeper and they put it in,” Indian Creek coach Eric Schrader said. “Aaron Bolton played a great game in goal for us and proved that he is one of the best keepers in the area.”

Bobcats advance: Somonauk beat Plano, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Class 1A Aurora Central Catholic Regional to move into Saturday’s regional final. Jacob Alstadt had two goals for the Bobcats (18-2-2), while Tommy Skupien and Josh Schmitt added one apiece.

Royals get rematch: Hinckley-Big Rock defeated Aurora Central Catholic, 8-2, in the Class 1A Aurora Central Catholic Regional semifinals.

Jared Madden had four goals, Zach Michels had two and Bernie Conley and Billy Weissinger each scored one.

The Royals will play Somonauk, a team they lost to twice in the regular season, in Saturday’s regional final.

Spartans move into first-place tie: Sycamore defeated Yorkville, 25-20, 25-21, behind Ratasha Garbes’ five kills, eight digs and three aces. The win moved the Spartans to 19-8 and 5-2 in the NI Big 12 East. Sycamore and Yorkville are now tied atop the division.

Brittany Huber added five kills and four digs for the Spartans, while Hannah Knox finished with seven kills and five digs. Christina Dailey had 11 digs for Sycamore.

Cogs top Marengo: Vanessa Garza had seven kills as Genoa-Kingston beat Marengo, 26-24, 25-23.

Cassidy Abraham added five kills for the Cogs. Bridget Halat finished with 10 assists for G-K, and Olivia Cotton had 12 digs.

The Cogs are now 17-10 and 7-3 in the Big Northern East.

“It was a real nice win for the program,” G-K coach Keith Foster said. “... We were hoping to battle in this conference this year and I think our record has proven we’re taking the right steps.”

Humes leads Somonauk: Allison Humes finished with five kills and seven digs for Somonauk in a 25-12, 25-21 win over Serena. Payton Orzech added six assists and four aces. The Bobcats are now 14-11.

Indians fall: Coal City beat Sandwich, 25-9, 25-11. Jessie Bivins had five assists for the Indians.

Hawks fall: Newark beat Hiawatha, 25-19, 25-11. Dani Clark finished with nine kills, 10 digs and a block for the Hawks, and Savanna Campbell had seven assists.
