Letter: Courageous Rohl is right candidate in 16th District
To the Editor:
In this election season, it is important to remember that choosing your congressional representative is every bit as important as voting for president.
Our current do-nothing Congress has the dismal approval rating of 13 percent. It is no secret the extreme gridlock of recent years has been caused primarily by those Republicans who believe the foremost threat to America is government itself, particularly programs that extend benefits such as food stamps or medical assistance.
They seem unconcerned about the concentration of wealth that has occurred in recent decades that is in danger of converting our democracy into a plutocracy. Private money from billionaires and special interests has been flooding into campaign coffers and PACs. To end gridlock and get the compromise necessary for effective government, members of Congress must have the political courage to resist the demands of their contributors and – when they think it is best for America – take unpopular positions.
The 16th Congressional District has a remarkably courageous candidate in Wanda Rohl. Wanda can relate to the problems of ordinary people, having suffered a devastating accident that left her permanently in a wheelchair and out of work. She refused to consider this a limitation and, with the help of government programs, continued her education and obtained a good job. Angry at recent threats to slash the safety net, but with little money or political clout, she has shown amazing nerve by challenging Republican Adam Kinzinger – whose campaign war chest in this election cycle easily tops a million dollars, nearly half from PACs (www.opensecrets.org).
Despite his professed concern about the national debt, Kinzinger was one of numerous Republicans who, led like sheep, signed Grover Norquist’s notorious pledge never to raise taxes, even on the 1 percent, which currently enjoys one of the lowest tax rates in modern history. Wanda believes we have the resources to move America forward without throwing individuals under the bus when they fall on hard times. Please vote for this outstanding candidate, Wanda Rohl.
