Well, well, well. In the same week we read about Darden Corp. wanting $900,000 from the City of DeKalb to build an Olive Garden restaurant here, in the news Tuesday, it is reported that Darden is going to turn a bunch of full-time workers to part-time because of the upcoming Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) that will start in January 2013.

Any company that employs more than 50 full-time workers must provide them and their dependents health insurance or face a penalty. The article in the Chronicle stated that Darden was going to employ 55 full-time workers at this location. After hearing this information on the news today, I find it very hard to believe that this will be the case. The news also stated that Olive Garden now imposes “tip sharing” among the employees and that allows Darden to pay a base salary of $2.13 instead of the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
